Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced the launch of a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership between India and the Nordic countries during the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo. The initiative aims to deepen collaboration in sustainability, clean energy, digital innovation and advanced industrial technologies.
Addressing a joint press statement after the summit, PM Modi said the partnership would combine Nordic countries’ specialised expertise with India’s talent, innovation capacity and large-scale market to create solutions for global challenges.
The Prime Minister highlighted the strengths of individual Nordic nations and how they would complement India’s growing technological ecosystem. He said Iceland’s expertise in geothermal energy and fisheries, Norway’s experience in the blue economy and Arctic research, and the Nordic region’s leadership in maritime sustainability would be linked with India’s skilled workforce and expanding industrial capabilities.
He also underlined cooperation in next-generation sectors such as telecom, cyber security, health technology, defence manufacturing and digital transformation. According to PM Modi, Sweden’s advanced manufacturing and defence technologies, Finland’s telecom and digital expertise, and Denmark’s capabilities in cyber security and health-tech would play an important role in the new partnership framework.
The summit brought together leaders from Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Discussions focused on renewable energy, sustainable economic security, innovation, resilient supply chains and strategic cooperation across sectors.
PM Modi’s visit to Norway marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister in more than 40 years. The India-Nordic Summit process began in Stockholm in 2018, followed by the second summit in Copenhagen in 2022.
Officials said the latest summit is expected to strengthen India’s trade and investment ties with Nordic countries and provide momentum to collaborations under the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement and the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).
PM Modi is currently on a five-nation tour that includes the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy.
