India and Japan recently held the second round of the India-Japan Economic Security Dialogue in New Delhi, focusing on strengthening cooperation in strategic sectors and building resilient supply chains amid growing global uncertainties.

The dialogue was co-chaired by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Japan’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Takehiro Funakoshi, and Takehiko Matsuo, Vice Minister for International Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Senior officials from key Indian ministries and departments, including the National Security Council Secretariat, Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Department of Telecommunications, and Department of Pharmaceuticals, participated in the discussions. Japanese representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Security Secretariat, and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry also attended the meeting.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Economic Security Dialogue acts as the institutional framework for implementing the Economic Security Initiative announced by the prime ministers of India and Japan during the 15th Annual Summit held in Tokyo in August 2025.

During the talks, both countries exchanged views on their economic security strategies and reviewed recommendations emerging from a private-sector dialogue organised jointly by the Confederation of Indian Industry and Japan’s Keidanren in March this year.

The discussions centred on enhancing industrial and technological collaboration across five priority sectors — critical minerals, semiconductors, information and communication technology including artificial intelligence and telecom, clean energy, and pharmaceuticals.

Both sides also highlighted the importance of stronger public-private partnerships to safeguard economic interests and strengthen trusted supply chains in the evolving geopolitical landscape.

Following the Economic Security Dialogue, a bilateral Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister Dialogue was held between Misri and Funakoshi, where the two sides discussed defence, trade, investment, innovation, technology cooperation, people-to-people ties, and regional and global developments of mutual interest.
